In this on-line portfolio, I display samples of the database and cartographic design projects I have worked on since 1999. My two main interests are the linkages between ecological variation and human social boundaries and relational databases. Although my own research focuses primarily on southeastern North America, the samples provided come from a wide variety of contexts. Each demonstrates the ways I leverage large data sets and my passion for computing technology to develop more efficient data management and analysis solutions, as well as more refined views of data variation. The links to the left provide a description of each project, listed more or less chronologically. My CV provides additional details and lists other projects. Every project represents an attempt to model, in microcosm, some aspects of the real world. I accomplish this by placing at the core of each application a relational database model that not only reflects user interface and analytical output needs, but also reproduces my best understanding of relevant concepts, processes, and objects. I built these solutions using a variety of software packages. For smaller projects geared to serve only a few users, I typically use Microsoft Access. In cases where a larger constituency or larger datasets must be served, I use mySQL, PHP, Microsoft SQL Server, Visual Basic, and several other applications. Much of my geographic information system (GIS) experience is with ESRI software. Although real data are included in the samples to demonstrate functionality, I removed sensitive or personal data . In some cases, I mention group design projects in which I played only a supporting role. These are marked with an asterisk (*). |
